Halloween is such a fun time of year. Lots of tricking goes on, and the treats are so yummy. However, this time of year can be bad for your teeth in many ways. We all know that the amount of sugar consumed increases significantly with fall parties, trick-or-treating, and the delicious candy corns that find their way into our homes during this time of year as well.

The sugar is not the only thing that is bad for your teeth during this time of year. The risks of a cracked tooth increase as well. There are several reasons for this:

  • Hard candy is meant to be sucked, however often they are bit into and a crack occurs. Hard candies such as lemon drops, sour balls and lollipops and so many other hard candies need to be avoided.
  • Caramel popcorn is another favorite fall treat. Popcorn seems harmless enough due to its fluffy and light consistency. The problem with popcorn occurs when a stray kernel sneaks its way into your handful that is shoved into your mouth. The force of your bite anticipates light and fluffy, but it met with hard and damaging.
  • Believe it or not, but the packaging that your fall treats come in have the potential of cracking your teeth. If you choose to use your teeth to break into your hard-to-open treats, beware, you could be damaging your teeth. Teeth are meant to chew, incise and bite, they are not meant to be a replacement for a knife or scissors.
