We hope that at least one of those resolutions involved your dental care. Optimal dental care is important because its effects reach into aspects of your total physical health as well.
If you made a new year’s resolution to brush your teeth better, let’s discuss what the word “better” means.
Better brushing does NOT involve:
- Brushing harder- More pressure applied to your brushing is not helpful and is harmful to your teeth and gums. Hard brushing can cause receding gums and cause bleeding as well. Plaque on your teeth is actually soft and loose, so you don’t have to scrub really hard to remove it.
- Brushing faster- Two minutes is the recommended amount of time to brush when you brush. Do this at least two times per day. Brushing with great speed of motion can cause your gums to recede as well. Your roots get exposed and you suddenly become sensitive to cold and hot foods and drinks. Use slow and gentle strokes for optimal brushing.
- Brushing with hard bristles- It may seem like the harder the bristles are, the more effective they are. This is not true for the majority of people. A soft-bristled toothbrush is most comfortable and safe. Toothbrushes with hard bristles can damage your gums, surface of your roots and protective enamel of your teeth.
