To Seal or Not to Seal My Teeth

Many dental professionals know the benefits of dental sealants.  The individuals choosing to purchase sealants are usually parents who never experienced the benefits of sealants for themselves.  It’s important, as parents take their children to their dental appointments, to enter their time informed so they can make an educated decision whether dental sealants are right for their family.

Regular care of your teeth through brushing and flossing helps remove food particle and plaque from the surfaces of teeth.  Toothbrushes typically can’t reach all the way into the depressions and grooves to completely rid these areas of the food and plaque.  The sealants act as shields “sealing out” plaque and food.

A sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the surface of the back teeth to prevent tooth decay.  It quickly bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth forming a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.  This process helps reduce the risk of cavities and tooth decay.  This process is usually recommended for children around the age of 6.

The process of sealing your teeth needs to be applied by a dental professional.  Teeth must be properly prepared and cleaned for this painless and quick procedure.   The sealants usually hold up under normal chewing habits.  They can last for several years and greatly reduce the risk of further damage and decay to your teeth.

At Ambler Dental Care we’d love to answer any questions you might have as you consider the benefits of sealants.
