Tips on How to Manage Dental Pain

Any type of pain is uncomfortable, even more so if the pain is surrounding the tooth. Imagine having to say no to your favorite dessert! What’s the point of eating all those delicious food if there is an unbearable, excruciating pain at every bite? No matter how tasty they are, the appeal is lost because of the pain.

When experiencing dental pain, the pain felt may either be sharp or dull and has variations in level. The pain can be felt in the tooth or the areas surrounding it. The most prevalent cause of a toothache is a dental cavity resulting from tooth decay. Proper oral hygiene is the number one preventative measure for dental cavities and the pain accompanying it. Gum disease, injury and a dental abscess will result in dental pain as well.

Here are some of the ways to manage the pain:

  • Saltwater mouth rinse may be used as a relief that will loosen the debris lodged in between the teeth or the areas with cavities. Salt has antiseptic properties that can reduce swelling, promote healing, and relieve soreness.
  • Over-the-counter medication can be used to help lessen dental pain. However, one must be careful when choosing pain relievers because it is not available for people of all ages.
  • Hydrogen peroxide rinses can effectively soothe the pain because of its antiseptic properties. A high amount of caution must be taken when gargling hydrogen peroxide and it must not be swallowed.
  • Applying a cold compress or ice pack on the affected area can help alleviate dental pain. This is especially true if the pain is caused by an injury or swollen gums. The person experiencing pain should hold the ice pack against the outside of the cheek where the pain is originating. It is recommended to keep it there for a few minutes. Applying the cold treatment on the affected area constricts the blood vessels and slows blood flow on that specific area—this method aids in numbing the pain and reducing swelling and inflammation.
